Pastor’s Thoughts: Grow in Faith is this week’s worship theme. In Paul’s letters, he instructs the early Christians to do this together. It’s the old adage of strength in numbers.
Coincidentally, this week’s reading and scripture messages have been on unity. The messages started with the beauty of unity. (Indeed!) They moved on to the unity of the Spirit, unity in Christ, unity in worship. Church unity and unity in thought, word, and deed. Jesus prayed for our unity – and so did Paul.
We are called to oneness with Christ and He calls us to oneness with each other. Conflict results in divisiveness and the loss of cohesiveness, the common consent of collaboration. It is unity that brings peace. It brings life and vitality to the community of faith. It does not require uniformity, but it does bring harmony and builds our faith.
And because someone reading this is wondering what conflict is taking place that I would be writing these words - there isn’t one among our numbers (to my knowledge). We have been quite unified as a faith community. As we continue to grow our faith we can, however, fulfill another calling – to be emissaries of peace. And this world desperately needs peace, peace that surpasses all understanding. Peace is a bond, one that we must actively protect and nurture. We can be a light to a world engulfed in conflict showing there is a better way, one of harmony even in our uniqueness.
